CHANGES TO DOT MEDICAL CARDS |
|
As CDL most CDL drivers have noticed, there has been a lot of change in how you obtain your DOT Medical Certification and what you have to do with it, the changes aren’t done. On May 21st of this year, the number of Doctors who can give you the DOT Medical exam will be greatly reduced for Interstate drivers.
Beginning May 21st, all medical exam providers will have to register with the FMCSA in order to issue you a valid interstate DOT Physical, after this date, if the examiner does not have the required certification, the physical will not be accepted and your CDL driving privelages may be revoked.
You may search the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners to find a provider or to see if your current provider is registered.

This applies to interstate drivers only. Intrastate drivers who do not cross state lines are not currently required to have a certified examiner but that regulation is left to individual states so check to be sure.
Medical exams issued prior to May 21st are valid through their expiration date. If your renewal is getting close, act sooner rather than later because with a limited number of examiners it may take some time to get your examination and back to work.
More information about the DOT physical requirements can be found at the FMSA website.
